Do I Need to File a Federal Tax Return?
Whether you must file depends on your filing status, age, gross income, dependency status, and whether special tax rules apply. Even if you are not required to file, filing may allow you to receive a refund or claim refundable tax credits.
General Filing Income Thresholds for 2026
Single - $16,100*
Married Filing Jointly - $32,200*
Head of Household - $24,150*
Qualifying Surviving Spouse - $32,200*
Married Filing Separately - $5*
When You May Still Need to File
These are some of the most common exceptions. Other situations may also require a federal tax return, even if your income is below the general filing threshold.
· Net self-employment income of $400 or more.
· Advance Premium Tax Credit reconciliation.
· Additional Medicare Tax or Net Investment Income Tax.
· Certain retirement, HSA, or household employment taxes.
Even If You Don't Have To
Even if you're not required to file, submitting a tax return may allow you to claim a refund of taxes withheld or receive valuable refundable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, if you're eligible.
*These are the general filing thresholds for taxpayers under age 65 who are not blind and are not claimed as dependents. Different filing requirements apply to taxpayers age 65 or older, taxpayers who are legally blind, dependents, self-employed individuals, and certain taxpayers subject to special filing rules.
